Animal Technician

Job Description

Cytotheryx, an innovative biotech company focused on production of primary human hepatocytes in large animal models, is seeking a highly motivated Animal Technician. This position will report to the Production Manager and be responsible for the humane treatment, critical care and husbandry of swine raised for the biotech industry. The ideal candidate for this position would benefit from a basic understanding of swine production, demonstrating a general knowledge of swine husbandry. Additionally, having confidence and proficient skills in assisting with critical veterinary care situations would be advantageous. Excellent organization, communication skills, and attention to detail are required.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide daily care for animals including feeding, cleaning, breeding, farrowing, weaning and observation
  • Collect/enter/report data while maintaining a high degree of accuracy, attention to detail and data integrity
  • Assist with surgical procedures and sample collection; prepare tissue, blood and other specimens for routine testing; assist veterinarians with animal health
  • Maintain facilities
  • Maintain proper personal protective equipment requirements and be diligent regarding proper PPE use of co-workers and guests
  • Manage logistics including feed delivery and waste
  • Assist Management in meeting Regulatory Compliance
  • Observe areas for quality improvement
  • Other duties as indicated

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Requires a minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent; A.A. or greater in Animal Science or Veterinary Technology preferred, but not required
  • Understanding of animal welfare
  • Solid understanding of swine husbandry

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Prolonged standing
  • Moderate physical exertion during facility maintenance and transportation/handling of animals
  • Carrying, handling, lifting, and reaching for objects up to 50 pounds
  • Exposure to heat, noise, large animals, and chemicals, within safe limits
  • Breathing through face mask/respirators as conditions demand
